Meditating.

Looking to do things that matter.

In search of the truth.

Living the married life.

This page is inspired by nownownow.

I built analytics with Umami

I came across a blog post by Orhun Parmaksız, where he lays out how he setup his blog. Kind of like how I wrote about how I updated my blog style and infrastructure.

Similarly, he is using a Static Site Generator but named Zola. I almost used it as well, but I didn’t find any great starter themes. They were too “terminal” and computer-styled.

What caught my attention was he’s use of a GitHub-powered commenting system, named utterances. I thought that was also quite rad. Even cooler, he said he is using an open source analytics, umami, to track who’s visited his site, from which device, where, and what were the most popular pages and posts. I’ve wanted exactly something like this!

Into the stillness

Six months before the fifth retreat.

I arrived at my first retreat carrying a lot on my shoulders. A firing from work that made me bitter and sad. After first retreat I understood my part in it.

Heartbreaks that had left grief behind and something physical. Also later I understood my role in it. I could feel the grief in my chest, not metaphorically but literally, like shapes with edges. I suffered from a gnawing loneliness that I neglected and shooed away and numbed with pornography.

At Thirty

Thirty life advice by a thirty-year-old, in somewhat order of importance. This is life advice and wisdom that I can’t really give and remind to anyone but myself. It’s what I’ve learned is good for me, and it might be good for you too.

Correlation is not Causation

I couldn’t think of a better title, I am sorry. It’s quite cliche, certainly. Anyway, I think correlation is witty. In my bachelor studies I studied a lot of advanced statistics and theory. Professors and teachers tried to nail the slogan ‘correlation is not causation’ to our brain.

Granted, correlation is one of the best things we have. Correlation gives even just faint direction when all else is dark and unknown. However, it is not at all a reliable indicator of anything by itself. So when I hear something is correlated, I cringe. Almost immediately I grow distrusting.

I built a Lightning Network paywall

Update. 20th, March. I believe a shrewd hacker somehow redirected the Lightning Network invoices to their wallet, making them just a few cents richer, and me more wiser. Quite fun, actually! Not my first rodeo. It makes a great story. I also made the paywal just for a specific subsection, instead of the whole article. I suppose not everyone has a LN wallet in their computers. Enjoy!

Update. 24th, March. Apparently Coinos has an issue with rotating tokens automatically, and it is not possible from my end to refresh them. In other words, it is not possible to pay LN invoice and unlock paywall given that their service is not working. It seems I must find another provider, but since this is a proof of concept, and I have a life, I am not going to dedicate any more time on this pet project. It was fun while it lasted.

Fifth meditation

I am now aware. I am aware of myself and breathing, the sensations on my nostrils and between my toes. A new world has opened up to me and there is no going back. This is the fifth meditation retreat.

Every other gimmick failed, but vipassana opened my horizons. It showed me what is, versus what I want things to be. It showed me, me, in the latest and truest form. Vipassana showed me joy and gratitude. It showed me God.

Tears of God

Before the 10-day retreat in August 2025, something had already cracked open. A month earlier, I was meditating alone in my room at home. After about half an hour I said certain words — three times. I don’t know why three times. Only later did I notice that in Gethsemane, Jesus also turned to God three times before his death.

Then I said those words, something happened that I still can’t fully comprehend: time jumped forward. I had been meditating for half an hour, and then suddenly it was an hour later. I know my body. I know what an hour feels like from the inside — I have seen it again and again, it is one of those things I can trust completely. This wasn’t tiredness, wasn’t distraction. Something threw me forward in time. I sat there stunned, unable to believe what had just happened. I laughed like a hyena.

How I surf the Web

The First Click

Windows 98

I clicked a glimmering power button on a light-gray box for the first time when I was five or six. This was a computer with Windows 98 installed in it. It was attached to a big, fat monitor, which I thought was “the computer”. All the other things didn’t matter; after all, I didn’t really “use” them. Mouse I held, keyboard I clicked away, and the screen I looked at. There was no tacit interaction, “an affordance” between me and the light-gray box. It was just a thing. A humming, indifferent thing.

I updated my blog style and infrastructure

My blog across the years

This blog is not so much a niche place for a specific subject, although lately I have been writing a lot about Bitcoin. (I am not called Bitcoin Ville for nothing!) This place is not my curriculum vitae, but a collection of opinions. This blog is my treasure trove of experiences written in words. It has become a personal and public journal. This place is a part of me now.

How Bitcoin relates to peace?

Miten Bitcoin liittyy rauhaan?

Does money grow on trees?

Bitcoin as a 'digital gold' analogue

Avoin kirje Euroopan parlamentin jäsenille Chat Controllista

Bitcoin is not 'freedom tech' by default

Crypto confuses me

Millaista on olla työtön

Puolalaista rauhoittavaa maisemaa. 9/2024.

About

Pöö pöö dear friends and friends’ friends,

I don’t know where to start honestly. There’s a lot to say about me and as much not to say. I keep juicy secrets, like you, that’s for sure. I’m not going to tell every little detail about me to internet strangers. I have to play it cool, if you know what I mean? So all I could tell is a curated narrative, skewed by my willingness to share certain aspects, conditioned by time and context.

Why do we cut grass?

what a beauty

Neuroscience Glitter

How Russia is Erasing Ukrainian Memory

Arch of the Peoples’ Friendship Between Ukraine and Russia is now broken. Time for justice.

The Escape from Holland

Personally, my alarms went full nuclear when I heard the borders in Finland would be closing and airplanes are going to stop flying. It was at this moment, when I realized that the coronavirus is deadly serious. (A zoom into a grey, serious face of me.)

The Crimson-Red Couch

A little crimson-red couch has space for three people to sit on. One could also sleep on it. The faded and beaten-up leather texture, and the slanted and overly soft cushion reflected its many years of use. It was just an old and ordinary couch, but with an extraordinary story. This is the story of the couch and me.

Quantity Mindset

Our celebration took place in the local student bar, the Pelibar. It is one of the best places to have fun in Friday night. But what was peculiar in the night was the chain of events that lead everyone there.

Of Beggars

The early begging experiences begin with ourselves. We beg for sweets from our parents in the shop and throw tantrums if we don’t get what we want. Sooner or later we begin to understand that this is not the way to go. There are better manipulation tactics like the nonverbal cute-dog-face expression. And once real life begging didn’t pan out for me in the early years, it then extended into the virtual realm.

Summer in Finland

I thought I was going to write something during the summer about something. Of psychology, interesting experiences, thoughts. …whatever really. I lacked motivation and my mind was busy elsewhere… This goes to show that thoughts and plans may not go as one would want. Especially when they are just that: just thoughts and incomplete plans. However, I wrote all my thoughts on my digital notebook, and now it is time to write again. Beginning, with summer.

The First Year is Wrapped Up

TL;DR: I recap the first year of my personal experiences on the Leiden IBP programme. Getting back to the routine is tough after spending a lazy and nonchalant Christmas vacation. I had no worries because I found an inexpensive room from a village called Noordwijk just before vacation started. The sympathetic private agent called and told a decision was made and I was chosen. He asked if I accepted the room. Oh HELL yea! It happened so fast that I could not believe my eyes (ears technically speaking). One phone call and all stress evaporated.

Accident Astray

Fifteen years old, young and naivë, I participated in the Finnish Lutheran tradition, the confirmation class. It was the last step before I had the right to marry: as if I was going to meet a girl anyways, not to mention marry, ever. An outsider could describe the ceremony as a cult trying to brainwash the young plastic minds with the mighty deeds of Jesus, and the word of the God and the Holy Spirit.

The First Exams Are Over

It was Sunday. I was recovering from a minor headache. I had enjoyed probably few too many vodka shots at friend’s place the day before. The deadline for a research paper assignment was due very soon and I hadn’t had a slightest clue where to start and what to write of. The laundry machine alerted “Houston, we have a problem” keeping my only underwear hostage until noon, when I finally found the hidden emergency lever.
“What do you want to do when you grow up?”

When I was a little child, in every family reunion all the relatives has asked me this same question half seriously, half jokingly. I didn’t know the answer.

Truth is that the notion of a dream career, including the wide array of other ambitions and motivations, shapes and shifts form in a constant flux. Usually at a slow pace, but sometimes quite drastically. Something happened to me one day. I experienced a sudden epiphany: I want to be a psychologist.

The Defier of the Wind Emperor

I enjoy my morning coffee, pack my laptop, books and notes in the yellow backpack. I exit the bicycle shed. I have two bicycles; a metal lump of a roadster with an ugly paint, and a grey rusty piece of scrap that once resembled a fine racing bicycle. The breaks, gears and chains are nearing the need of care and oil. Regardless of the looks and mechanics, the new bicycle has proven to be a solid and reliable machine. I climb on my bicycle and set the course towards Leiden. A bold sea wind blasts against me as I begin accelerating. A storm is brewing. Winter is coming.

The Weeks Preceding This Moment, a Review

The current milieu: rain is deluging the streets, wind is blowing from all angles and dark grey clouds loom above. Distant, frustrated drivers honking at who knows, and the air in the streets stenches like garbage. Makes me question why urbanization is trending. I am currently sitting on an uncomfortable plastic chair and enjoying the occasional Doppler effect of an ambulance siren buzz. Fortunately, my audiophile quality music occupies the sound space of my consciousness.

Things Clicked!

Victory! I found accommodation. In short, I did thorough planning and contemplation on living in a camper van during the studies. But first I had to know for sure if it was a valid option. I sought advice first from the municipality and then from the university. I discovered that it is not a legally possible long-term solution, which is why I didn’t pursue the contingency plan. However, after getting more knowledge in the matter, traveling and living in a camper van is now in my bucket list for sure. During the second inquiry I was offered a room from the Hague, and there and then I signed the papers.

Why I Started a Blog

Finally, I had the motivation to start writing a personal blog. Countless moments of pondering, planning and procrastinating this blog was born, though it wasn’t an easy task. Particularly, the trouble was choosing the right platform, while also considering the technical quirks, blog design and most importantly: the ease of setup. I wasn’t going to install everything manually, namely databases, domains, CSS, and everything in-between. Additionally, I most definitely wasn’t too keen on spending too much dough on it.

My First Bitcoin Coffee

My expedition in the Netherlands had a few leisure activities too apart from all the exhaustive house search.
